We’re Changing our Name
Some of you may have noticed that we’ve changed our name from South Cariboo Aquaplex Initiative to Cariboo Aquatics.
The name ‘South Cariboo Aquaplex Initiative’ came about from collective thoughts and ideas from the group and community members. When we started out, we wanted everyone to know that we were a new group of community members advocating for an aquatic facility in the South Cariboo. This left us with finding a new, different name from the previous South Cariboo Aquatic Society.
The ‘Aquaplex’ name represented inclusiveness. Part of our goal to be inclusive, is to ensure that other recreation groups in the community would not be displaced. In particular, the previously proposed aquatic facility location would have displaced user groups of the Stan Halcro Arena, the Agriplex. When the Aquaplex Initiative moved forward, it was always a priority to find a solution for the users of the Agriplex, if they were to be displaced by an aquatic facility. This is why the ‘Aquaplex’ was chosen in part of our name.
Almost a year later, and gaining momentum, we’ve been working on building relationships and gathering support. We’ve decided to move forward with a name that better reflects our purpose, our advocacy work, and our vision: The Cariboo Aquatics Society.
